Joe Trillo announces Independent run for Rhode Island Governor

Joe Trillo was first elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 2000, defeating a 14-year Democrat. Since becoming elected, former Representative Trillo was appointed Deputy Minority Leader and House Minority Whip. In 2012 he was elected National Republican Committeeman from Rhode Island.
He is the former Chairman of the House Oversight Commission on Fire Safety which was created following the Station Night Club fire. Joe also served as chair of the commission to implement improved security measures at the State House, lending his years of experience and expertise in the security industry. While an active member of the House Corporations Committee, Joe was an active proponent of not only small business but also environmental issues. He also served on the Rhode Island Emergency Management Commission, was a member of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and has served on the House Committee for Small Business. He also served on the RI Lottery Oversight Commission and was Chairman of the House Committee to Eliminate Rules and Regulations. Most recently, he served as Honorary Chairman for the Donald Trump for President Campaign, and in the past worked for the Mitt Romney and John McCain Presidential Committees.
He has been an outspoken voice for the average taxpayer, aggressively protecting their interests even in the face of strong union opposition. He worked with “Save our State” to defeat the establishment of an Native American casino in Rhode Island. He was the primary sponsor of the ‘E-verify’ bill for state employees and supports allowing law enforcement to check immigration status of people who commit a crime. He was co-sponsor of the immigration law that was sponsored in Arizona referred to as 1070.
The producer and host of two statewide weekly cable television shows “Trillo Talks” and “Issues and Ideas” Joe has also produced television commercials, television shows and special event videography. He is a frequent guest on many local television programs such as “A Lively Experiment”, “10 News Conference”, “12 Newsmakers” and “6 on the Record”. Joe has been a guest host for such radio personalities as John DePetro, Dan York, Buddy Cianci, and Matt Allan.
Joe has been an industry leader in the security and alarm business for over 30 years, and founded one of he largest security trade shows in the country, as well as the New England Alarm Dealers Association. Former President of the Rhode Island Alarm Dealers Association, Joe has also been active in the music industry, operating the largest chain of music stores in Rhode Island. He served as Vice President of the National Association of Music Merchants and plays keyboard, organ, piano and drums. He is former President of the Cranston Jay Cees, former President of the Miss Rhode Island America pageant and served on the National Association of Miss America state pageants.
His lifelong commitment to boating led to his support and passage of the “Clean Water Act” which requires boat inspection and certification of a boat’s ability to hold its wastewater. Joe received his U.S. Coast Guard Captain license in the 1970’s working as a charter boat captain operating out of Newport during the America’s Cup Races. He has captained many large and small boats up the entire U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas. An inventor, Joe has obtained several U.S. patents for original products he created and designed, including several marine products that have been manufactured and distributed worldwide.
He has also conducted many sales, motivational and political seminars and established a Republican Candidate School to educate and assist prospective Republican candidates on successful campaigning. He is married to Marilyn Cocozza Trillo, an accomplished vocalist and former 3rd runner up to Miss America. He has three children and five grandchildren.
