“DRIVING PRIVILEGE LICENSES” AND PERMITS FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS
Senate Bill No. 183. BY Ciccone, Nesselbush, Quezada, Crowley, Miller
–This law would allow the DMV to issue driving privilege licenses and permits to undocumented immigrants.
–“Driving privilege licenses” and “driving privilege permits” would not be valid for federal identification purposes, or for voting/voter registration.
–Applicants for these licenses and permits would have to have no felony convictions, have lived in Rhode Island for two (2) years, provide proof that they have paid taxes, and file an affidavit stating that they are seeking to legalize their immigration status.
–Applicants would need to provide proof of vehicle insurance, take driving tests, and meet inspection standards, thus making the roads safer for everyone.
–This law would enable people to drive vehicles that are insured and to be on the road legally, to get to work, to medical appointments, to pick up children, etc.
